Q & A

How does Hypnosis work?

Hypnosis allows a different kind of communication between brain hemispheres than is normally possible during full wakefulness.

Researchers at Harvard studied the brains of 57 people (link here) during guided hypnosis. They found that: two areas of the brain that are responsible for processing and controlling what’s going on in your body show greater activity during hypnosis. Likewise, the area of your brain that’s responsible for your actions and the area that is aware of those actions appear to be disconnected during hypnosis.

Hypnosis allows a kind of efficient deeper learning through Non Sleep Deep Rest as noted by Dr. Andrew Huberman, Neuroscientist and tenured Professor at Stanford University.

Hypnosis uses a state of mind that we go through daily and nightly before falling (hypnagogic) asleep and before waking up (hypnopompic).

Hypnosis is not sleep but similarly engages the unconscious part of the mind.

A trained Hypnotist can help facilitate that quasi-dream state with a client and access subconscious/unconscious behaviors and make changes as acceptable by the client.

Will I be aware and able to hear what is said by the Hypnotist?

Yes the hypnotist counts on you to be able to hear instructions and guided imagery etc.  While your attention may drift away and you may not recall everything said, this is similar to many conversations.

Sometimes people experience time distortion during deep trance states which can make the time of a session go by quickly, this may result in less of the session being recalled by the conscious mind.

What if it doesn't work on me?

I will always test my work and get feedback from a client. For example if you come in looking to feel better about stress or worry, I will check how bad it is when you come in and check when you leave. I'll also often check part way through so we are sure we are going the right direction or I can pivot to other techniques etc.

I view Hypnosis as teamwork.  We work together towards a shared goal.

I will only work with people once they are comfortable and ready to proceed towards a goal or outcome that is clear.

How many sessions does it take to get results?

Although it is possible and even likely to get amazing results after just one session, 2 or 3 sessions is a good way to go and the most beneficial for most issues.

However many sessions you do with me, I will give you tools you can use on your own to support your goals.

I'm here to build your independence rather than a dependance back upon me.  My goal is to give you the most effective process and make the best use of our time.
